On the Water: Sailing the K2

Sailing the K2The K2’s sailing characteristics are similar to that of a Mirror Dinghy. The boat is equipped with a gunter rigged mainsail similar to that of the Mirror, plus a jibsail with window.

K2 is a responsive yet stable boat which will sail in both light airs and strong winds (max force 4 recommended!). Although built to take 3 adults she is also easy to sail single handed with jib sail sheets easily accessible to the helm.

The boom is set reasonably high up for ease of tacking and gibing and the mainsail can be easily reefed if required.

K2 is a comfortable dinghy to sail;  there are wide side seats for the helm to balance the trim of the boat fore and aft, and a good size centre seat with ample leg room for the crew.

Reinforced PVC buoyancy is supplied as standard and consists of one bag under the aft thwart and two long tubes that fit under the seats along the length of the boat. These are strapped securely to the bottom and side of the hull to ensure that in the event of a capsize, the boat does not ship too much water. The aft bag will enable a single handed sailor to board the boat from the aft transom, thus maintaining the stability of the boat.

The buoyancy is dual purpose in that the two long tubes can be fitted to the outside of the hull; this is useful if learning to sail as it greatly enhances stability, thus minimising the risk of accidental capsize they also provide useful fendering in the event of a collision.

The sailing gear is of the highest quality and from reputable companies including RWO, Jack Holt, Jeckells and Plastimo. For the discerning sailor a mainsail with battens is available, together with the a Dotan Kick-Up Rudder Tiller assembly to which can be added a tiller extension.

A self draining bailer is also available, positioned just behind the centre board box at the lowest part of the hull for easy access by the helm.

Jack Holt swivel jib cleats positioned on the centre thwart make them just as easy for a single hander to operate as the crew.

A joy of the K2 is the ability to launch and recover the boat without the need for a launch trolley; this is made possible by a small in-built skeg wheel.

Naturally we look forward to Press and Customer reviews on the K2 which we will print when forthcoming.
